About

Hi, I’m Karawynn, and I write Pocketmint.

Over the past few years I’ve become very interested in matters of personal finance, and have watched the explosion of pfblogs with fascination and enthusiasm. For a long time I was content just to read and learn rather than write, but as time went on, I began to have more to say that I wasn’t seeing covered elsewhere, until finally in June of 2008 I decided it was time to speak up. So Pocketmint was born.

I began ‘blogging’ in 1997, before the word ‘blog’ was even coined. (“We called it ‘journalling’ back then,” she said, brandishing her cane in the air and sucking on her false teeth.) But I always focused on personal essays, so this is the first time I’ve tried to tackle a thematic subject of general interest.

I am not a professional financial advisor, and anything I say here is merely my opinion — usually a well-researched and founded opinion, but an opinion nevertheless. My personal experience includes digging myself into a huge financial hole and then climbing back out of it: five years ago my partner and I had about $40K on credit cards; today we have zero consumer debt and $40K in emergency savings.

Otherwise: I am thirty-nine years old; I live in Seattle, Washington with my partner Jak, a border collie, a cat, and (half-time) two stepdaughters, age ten and sixteen. I am a graphic designer, a first-time homeowner, and a foodie with a cooking hobby. I keep a personal blog at karawynn.net.

Pocketmint is running on WordPress with my own custom theme. If you’re interested in hiring me for design work, see my portfolio site.
